Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition whereby people don't have enough of a chemical called dopamine because some nerve cells in their brain have died. Without dopamine, movements become slower so it takes longer to do things while the loss of nerve cells in the brain causes the symptoms of Parkinson's to appear.
There's currently no cure for Parkinson's and we don't yet know why people get the condition. Parkinson's doesn't directly cause people to die, but symptoms do get progressively worse over time.
How many people have Parkinson's? Approximately one person in every 500 has Parkinson's. That's over 8,000 people in Ireland that are living with Parkinson’s disease and it is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world.
Parkinsons UK puts huge amounts of money into finding better treatments and ways to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson's, leading the work to find a cure.
